IGCSE Coursework

Informative Essay

 

Task – Write an informative essay about your favourite sport. You must ensure your essay is between 500-800 words in length.

 

To inform means to give facts to another person.

 

GAPS


Genre - could be giving instructions, recipes, directions, manuals, science experiment

Audience - could be anyone

Purpose - to inform - giving unbiased information which is reliable and factual

Style – formal

 

Paragraph plan

Introduction – Introduce your favourite sport, and briefly explain what the sport involves.

Paragraph 1 – Where is it played?

Paragraph 2 – The rules of the sport

Paragraph 3 – The fans (who/where/why)

Paragraph 4 – The history of the sport (when was it introduced/first played)

Paragraph 5 – The future of the sport (e.g. is there a big event coming up/ is it being played more/less/ does it need investment)

 

You may have to do some research to find out more about the sport as you write your essay. Please ensure that you record at the bottom of your essay your sources/webpages where you got your information.

Coursework extra session:

if you need to or would like to improve your two coursework pieces that you have handed in, please come to R22 in Roselands tomorrow (January 23rd)  at 9am. Computers and your lovely teacher will be on hand from 9-10.40 to help you improve your coursework.

Remember - coursework is 40% of your overall English Language grade!

There will be compulsory sessions when you return from mock exams. Why not use tomorrow to ensure you don;t need to come to compulsory sessions after school later in the term!

Reading Paper/ English Language

What skills should you be using in Section 1:
  • skimming, scanning and selecting (finding information)
  • understand explicit and implicit information (if unsure of what explicit and implicit means check them out)
  • analyse effects used by the writer and write about them
Section 2 is testing your reading and writing skills:
  • have you understood the passage?
  • have you understood the thoughts, feelings and views contained and reflected these in your writing?
  • can you develop ideas from the passage?
  • can you write fluent sentences that make sense?
  • can you write using a wide range of vocabulary?
  • are you writing correctly for the intended audience (= who the letter is for)?

About Friday's mock:

You will be given a passage to read. You will then be given several questions about the passage which you must answer.

You need to ensure you provide enough in your answer to achieve all of the marks available.

You will then be asked to do a writing task connected to the passage you have read.
AQA Literature exam (Summer 2014).

Please remember you have to have read and have studied the following three texts for the Literature exam:
'Death of a Salesman' by Arthur Miller




















'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck




'Journey's End' by R.C. Sherrif

Journey's End (Heinemann Plays)

You must have read fully 'Death of a Salesman' and 'Journey's End' before returning to lessons after the mocks. Copies available from Mrs Graham. You will be given exercises to check your understanding when you return from study leave.
Reading skills are vital to succeed in English. You should be reading every day, and in particular reading materials that have a higher reading age and use mature vocabulary. Below are links to newspapers that are updated daily and have lots of good quality articles for you to read.
